Roll Your Own - Personalized Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Prices for purchased chocolate dipped strawberries can be sky high. Check out some online retailers or go to your local fancy desserts or grocery shop and you'll see a range of high prices. A lot of places sell 6 berries for $30. Some go for $45 a dozen. Add in shipping and that's some cash for some nice, but ultimately easy-to-do chocolate covered strawberries. What's stopping you from doing it yourself and "rolling your own" so to speak? Grab a pan, grab some strawberries and chocolate, get a cookie sheet with some parchment paper and you are good to go with a few more details... This whole process starts with the best fruit. The best-looking, plumpest, most healthy-appearing strawberries are your search mission. Go organic if there's a good price, or if price is no object, because the flavor and sweetness is more intense and juicy from my experience. If in season, which is spring and summer in your area, then they are going to be better. Otherwise, you'll be purchasing berries likely imported from far away such as Mexico and South America, and then the price is going to be substantially higher. But do what you must if you're craving this treat. For your chocolate pick, you can certainly go with the range from milk, semi-sweet and dark. Don't forget about white too if you desire. Stores sell large bags of chocolate chips which you can simply melt on low heat in a pan. Alternatively, take a baker's block of chocolate, cut it up into smaller pieces and put it in the small soup pan over low heat on the oven. Or consider a double boiler method where you melt all the chocolate in a glass bowl sitting on top of simmering water. Whatever you decide sounds best to you, go for it, this is your creation here. Don't forgot to clean and dry the berries. Now you're ready for the dipping. So at this point, take a strawberry by the stem, or if you have some toothpicks, small forks, fondue utensils or the like, you could alternatively prick them on top, and dip in the melted chocolate pot. I like to go close to the top, still leaving a small level of berry showing. Place your finished chocolate covered strawberries in a row on your lined cookie sheet. After you've made your assembly line, it's just a matter of letting them dry. Before they completely dry, you can also get even crazier and add some more toppings to them. Little candy sprinkles, more chocolate bits, crushed nuts, sugar - any accessory flavor that will appeal to you. And then say congratulations to yourself - you're on your way to being a veteran in the chocolate covered strawberries world. Stellar reviews and questions asking how to make them will be peppered in your direction. You may be asked to divulge your little secrets from those who love your new culinary creation. Share away, the happier the better for everyone involved! ABOUT THE AUTHOR: T. Allan Roll is a foodie at heart. A trip to Napa and Sonoma long ago stoked his culinary passions. He's created a site honoring one of his favorites, Chocolate and Strawberries which has more ideas and information for this great combination
