Ringtones - Origin and Development

The history of ringtones lies entwined with the history of hand sets and their peripheral services. The success of modern hand sets was brought about, we can say without a fair amount of exaggeration, by the advent of varied and newer types of ringtones. We can put it either way-newer music formats attracted hand set manufacturers to evolve handsets that could accommodate them; or hand sets with better features made newer music formats compatible. Either way, the music industry, the hand set industry and the customer,? all have benefited greatly and no one is complaining.

The initial offering of caller tones for use in hand sets were named the monophonic tones, which sounded boring at times because only one sound came out at a time and also lacked variety. The only saving grace was that sounds with different pitches could be played one after the other. However, this did not satiate inquisitive minds bringing about a type of ring tone which was a quantum jump, both qualitatively and quantitatively, called polyphonic melodies with near real music qualities. About sixteen different sounds made from musical instruments could be played at a single moment, making them the darling of masses of that time.

However, caller tones did not stop at that. Hand sets started incorporating music players and superior speakers that could play any sound under or over the sun. This heralded the advent of real tones or true tones. Most of the true tones available these days are either based on music tracks or simple recordings of any other sounds like sounds of nature or domestic sounds like the wailing of a baby. These tones are immensely popular these days.

Modern day caller tones are not supposed to do their duty of alerting the caller alone. They are called upon to boost the confidence of the owner, put off an unwanted caller, give a fright of their life to someone whom the owner despises, or just to showcase the present mood of the owner. Showing off in public and self gratification, a ringtone can be a tool for these too. However, when seen at the virtuous side, a ring tone is a great value addition to the sleek cell phone one is carrying.

All these factors have joined hands to push up caller tones as one of the most yearned for fashion accessories. The huge demand has brought about windfall profits to the people who are in the business of selling them.

Ringtones and its business have quickly overcome their birth pangs and have matured over the years. However, like old wine, caller tones have also become more wholesome and enjoyable with the addition of technologies. The name tone, which is really a true tone with the name of the owner embedded in it, the video ring tone, which is a true tone combined with a video clip, or the best of all, the sing tone or the sing along tone where lyrics sung and recorded by the user himself accompanies the undulating flow of real instrumental music.

The choices available are simply mind blowing. The customer is again the king. Long live the king!
